Renowned actress Nicola Coughlan, famous for her role as Penelope Featherington in the Netflix series Bridgerton since 2020, recently gave a captivating masterclass on how she changes her accent.
In a video widely spread on YouTube that has garnered hundreds of thousands of views, Irish actress Nicola Coughlan showcased her accent-switching skills. She effortlessly switched from her soft Galway accent to mimic accents from Derry, Dublin and Cork, demonstrating her acting and linguistic talents.
In the masterclass titled Nicola Coughlan Shares Her Many Accents: Accent Challenge, Coughlan explained how she achieved Penelope Featherington’s accent for Bridgerton, Clare Devlin’s accent for Derry Girls and even simulated the Kardashians’ accent to illustrate differences. She elaborated on how a character's accent might change subtly from season to season, reflecting their development. For example, Penelope evolves from a shy, clipped persona into a mature “woman” as she takes on the role of Lady Whistledown. Coughlan also displayed her sense of humor, stating, “I burn for you, Colin, I actually do,” in the Derry accent she adopted for her role in Derry Girls.

Nicola Coughlan has been acting since childhood and is well-known for her roles as Clare Devlin in the Channel 4 sitcom Derry Girls (2018-2022) and Penelope Featherington in the Netflix period drama Bridgerton (2020-present). Derry Girls is a teen comedy set in 1990s Derry, Northern Ireland, while Bridgerton is a widely acclaimed period drama romance set in Regency-era London, where Coughlan continues to captivate audiences with her witty, humorous yet sensitive character. Her career has been marked by continuous performances, extensive training and diverse roles on screen.
Nicola Coughlan’s depiction of Penelope Featherington is a key facet of Bridgerton. Her character's development from a timid, ignored girl to a self-assured and forceful woman has been a crucial aspect of the show. The ease the actress has when it comes to shifting accents and personifying different personalities adds depth and genuineness to her acting. Her genius made Penelope a cherished character and reflected her flexibility as an actress.
The Bridgerton series on Netflix has captured people's attention for several reasons. It launched during the COVID-19 pandemic when people were seeking distractions, and nothing is more engaging than relationships and passion. Additionally, the adaptation of a period drama to resonate with contemporary audiences proved to be a successful blend. This combination gives the series a fresh and lively feel, wrapped in romance. The social media buzz and word of mouth further boosted its popularity, with people eagerly watching the show to avoid the fear of missing out. These factors helped Bridgerton become a key knock on Netflix, allowing viewers to escape their daily routines and indulge in a beautifully written plot, expertly portrayed by unique characters, all set in a romantic, ageless and historically rich setting with a modern twist.
