Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday moved to replace defense minister Sergei Shoigu, nominating economist Andrey Belousov as his replacement, Russian state news agencies reported, citing the Kremlin.

Putin also published decrees naming Shoigu as the new secretary of the Security Council, replacing Nikolai Patrushev who has been dismissed.

Mr. Shoigu has been Defense Minister since 2012 and has therefore led Russian army operations since the start of the war in Ukraine.

Mr. Putin proposed Andrei Belousov, a former deputy Prime Minister, as the new Defense Minister.
