The Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) in the Middle East has inaugurated the Prix Dolla Karam Sarkis, an annual award established to commemorate the legacy of Professor Dolla Karam Sarkis by celebrating excellence in scientific research in Lebanon. This prize aims to honor her and recognize her active collaboration and substantial contributions to the francophone scientific community over more than two decades.
The establishment of the Prix Dolla Karam Sarkis was announced by Jean-Noël Baléo, the Regional Director of the AUF, during a tribute ceremony held at Saint Joseph University of Beirut. Dolla Karam Sarkis, former Vice-Rector for Research at Saint Joseph University of Beirut and former Dean of its Faculty of Pharmacy, profoundly influenced over two decades of active engagement within the scientific and governance bodies of the AUF at both regional and global levels. She notably chaired its Scientific Council and represented Middle Eastern member institutions on the AUF’s board of directors.
Annually, the Middle East Regional Directorate of the AUF will confer the Prix Dolla Karam Sarkis with the aim of recognizing two young Lebanese researchers from AUF member institutions in Lebanon. These researchers must have made significant contributions to the health sciences, producing impactful research that addresses national health challenges.
The award will support ongoing projects and will be bestowed each year upon two young researchers (aged 40 or younger, and already holding a doctoral degree) whose work encompasses a broad spectrum of health-related fields (medicine, pharmacy, dental medicine, biology, midwifery, public health, the health aspects of social or environmental sciences, medical ethics, etc.).
Applications for the Prix Dolla Karam Sarkis will be evaluated based on the quality and originality of the research, its scientific, technological and social impact, its relevance to the Lebanese national context, and its contribution to the Francophone dimension.
Each winner will receive a prize of €5,000. The awards will be presented at a ceremony organized by the AUF.
