The caretaker Minister of Economy and Trade, Amin Salam, and Unicef's representative in Lebanon, Édouard Beigbeder, signed a joint action plan for the year 2024, comprising two components. The first is to activate the implementation of the salt iodization law by establishing mechanisms to strengthen the capacity of producers to adhere to the law, as well as to develop monitoring procedures to control this sector. The second is to ensure a healthy food environment, with a focus on regulating the marketing of unhealthy foods to children.
To implement the law on salt iodization, mechanisms will be put in place to strengthen producers' compliance capacity and ensure effective monitoring. This will involve the development of monitoring and quality control procedures both for the Ministry of Economy and Trade and for salt producers in Lebanon.
As for child nutrition and the regulation of the marketing of unhealthy foods for children, it is envisaged to assess the food and nutrition environment, with particular emphasis on consumer behavior in terms of healthy nutrition.
