According to reports from Axios, the United States was notified just minutes before Israel carried out an airstrike in Syria, targeting an Iranian embassy building. Notably, Israel didn't seek explicit approval from Washington; instead, they informed the US authorities when the aircraft were already en route to Damascus.

Axios also states that the United States directly cautioned Iran, asserting that it wasn't involved in or aware of the Israeli offensive.

The strike occurred shortly before White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State Blinken engaged in a secure video conference with senior Israeli officials. This discussion aimed to explore alternatives to a potential Israeli ground invasion near Rafah.

Interestingly, during the two-and-a-half-hour meeting, the airstrike in Syria wasn't brought up, according to an American official.

Washington's primary concern revolves around the possibility of the conflict expanding regionally. Iran has pledged retaliation, condemning Israel for violating international conventions.

Following the attack, there were reports of several drone strikes. A senior US official cited by Axios expressed a high likelihood of an escalation in hostilities between Israel and Iran, along with its allied groups.

Furthermore, a senior Israeli official mentioned that the Israeli Army was on high alert, anticipating potential reprisals from Iran-linked militias in Syria.

Iran announced on Tuesday that it had delivered "a significant message" to the United States following the Israeli airstrikes in Damascus, which resulted in the deaths of seven members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, including two commanders.

The content of the message was not disclosed, but it was conveyed to an official from the Swiss embassy, which represents US interests in Iran. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran's diplomatic chief, stated that the message was communicated during a meeting at the Foreign Ministry.

"During this meeting, the terrorist nature of the attack and the criminal actions of the Israeli regime were outlined, and the responsibility of the American government was underscored," he added.

"A significant message was conveyed to the American government, which supports the Zionist regime. America must be held accountable," he further emphasized.
