- New Poll Shows US Opinion Now Disapproves Israeli War in Gaza

A Gallup Organization poll published on wednesday shows that American public opinion disapproves of Israel's actions in Gaza.
After narrowly supporting Israel's military action in Gaza in November, Americans now oppose the campaign by a solid margin. Fifty-five percent currently disapprove of Israel's actions, while 36% approve it, according to a poll conducted by Gallup before the UN Security Council adopted a resolution on Monday calling for an immediate ceasefire during Ramadan.
The measure was adopted thanks to the abstention of the United States, which did not veto the resolution. The United States had previously vetoed other resolutions calling for a ceasefire.
Seventy-four percent of American adults say they are closely following developments between Israel and Hamas, similar to the 72% measured by Gallup in November. A third of Americans (34%) say they are following the situation "very closely".
The three main party groups in the US are less supportive of Israel's actions in Gaza than they were in November. Democrats and independents lost 18 percentage points and Republicans seven points.
Independents went from split opinion to opposition to Israeli military action. Democrats, who were already largely opposed in November, are even more so today, with 18% in favor and 75% opposed.
Republicans still support Israel's military efforts, but a reduced majority - 64%, down from 71% - now approve of them.
The American president, Joe Biden's approval rating for his handling of the Middle East situation, at 27%, is the lowest of the five questions asked in the survey. Indeed, far fewer Democrats (47%) approve of his handling of the situation between Israelis and Palestinians than approve of his handling of the economy, the environment, energy policy and foreign affairs in general. On these issues, no less than 66% of Democrats approve of Biden.
The fact that only 21% of independents and 16% of Republicans approve of his performance on the Middle East situation only contributes to Biden's low rating on this issue.
It seems, however, that the Middle East conflict has had no obvious impact on Biden's political stance. His overall popularity rating is 40%, compared with 37% in the October and November polls, perhaps due to Americans' greater confidence in the US economy.
Although Americans are critical of Mr. Biden's handling of the conflict, his approval rating is no lower today than it was before the conflict began.
