Mikati: Preventing State Collapse Until Political Consensus Is Reached
Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati affirmed that the government’s primary concern is to maintain the state’s structure and prevent it from further deteriorating until a political consensus is achieved, enabling the implementation of appropriate reforms.

Speaking at the start of a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Mikati underlined the main reason behind Lebanon’s political and security woes.

“The problem,” he said, “lies in the fact that there are two political currents in the country: one that wants the total collapse of the state, and the other seeks to rebuild the state.”

The PM praised the efforts of the National Moderation Bloc and the Quintet Committee aimed at closing the gap between political factions in order to facilitate the long-delayed election of a president of the republic.

“The primary and fundamental responsibility in this endeavor remains with us, the Lebanese people. Internal disputes must not obstruct the priority of working (together) towards fulfilling constitutional obligations by electing a new president for Lebanon,” Mikati added.

Commenting on the war in Gaza and an eventual ceasefire agreement, the Prime Minister was reassuring: "Despite Israeli threats, we will see long-term stability, which will include the countries of the region.”
