The Free Patriotic movement’s (FPM) vice president for foreign affairs, Dr. Naji Hayek, held a meeting with Saudi ambassador to Lebanon, Dr. Walid al-Bukhari, in his office at the embassy, in an effort to arrange relations between the movement’s leader, Gebran Bassil, and the ambassador, and to reopen a new page in the party’s strained ties with Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi ambassador is bound to meet Bassil soon as part of consultations by the Quintet’s ambassadors, the five-nation committee grouping France, Qatar, the US and Egypt in addition to Saudi Arabia, who are seeking to achieve a breakthrough in the stalled presidential election.
While the American ambassador informed her colleagues in the Quintet that she will not meet with Bassil due to US sanctions against him, the FPM is seeking to restore its relations with a number of Arab and Western countries. The Qatari ambassador has already met Bassil, who visited Qatar more than once at the special invitation of the Qatari authorities to discuss the presidential file.
