The Chinese, Russian and Iranian navies are holding joint military drills in the Gulf of Oman this week, against a volatile regional backdrop of war in Gaza and attacks in the Red Sea by the Yemeni Houthis.

These three countries, which share a common desire to counter what they see as American hegemony, had already organized joint drills in the region last March.

These maneuvers aim to "jointly maintain regional maritime security," according to the Chinese Ministry of Defense.

"China will send the missile destroyer Urumqi, the missile frigate Linyi and the supply ship Dongpinghu," it said on Monday, the first day of the drills, which will end on Friday.

A detachment of ships from Russia's Pacific Fleet, led by the cruiser Varyag, arrived for this purpose on Monday at the Iranian port of Chabahar (southeast), Russian state media reported.

The start of these drills on Monday coincided with the first day of Ramadan, at a time when the Israeli army is continuing its bombardments in Gaza.
