Grand Mufti of Lebanon Sheikh Abdel Latif Derian warned against the dangers Lebanon is facing due to the presidential vacancy.
"Electing a president is the first step towards building the state and towards a straight path to redress the work of the government's declining institutions," he said.
Speaking on Sunday, on the eve of the holy month of Ramadan, which is expected to start on Monday, Derian denounced "Israeli violations of international resolutions as Israel kills our children and destroys our homes."
Expressing his distress at what the inhabitants of southern Lebanon have been enduring since October 8, the Sunni leader stressed that "we make no distinction between one region and another, and that the aggressions taking place in the South are aggressions against Lebanon as a whole."
"There can be no solution to the Palestinian question without the creation of a free and independent Palestinian state, with Holy Jerusalem as its capital,” he added.
The Grand Mufti concluded by affirming that "regardless of our political differences, we must agree and cooperate for stability and continuity in our country. The absolute priority today is the election of a head of state and the preservation of our unity, Muslims and Christians, in accordance with the Taif Accords."
