- Southern Front: Flareup of Violence, Sunni Extremist Combatants Killed
Hezbollah and Israel escalated exchange of heavy fire across the border Sunday with Hezbollah firing two rounds of rockets and missiles at northern Israel and the occupied Shebaa farms.
Hezbollah said it fired “dozens of Katyusha-type rockets” at the Mochav farming village in the locality of Meron in the morning in retaliation to an Israeli strike in which three of its fighters were killed.
The Israeli army said “around 35 rockets launched from Lebanon towards Israeli territory were identified, a number of which were intercepted.”
Israeli media then reported that 30 missiles had been launched from Lebanon towards the Shebaa farms in late afternoon Sunday and sirens sounded in several areas in northern Israel.
The Israeli army declared that it was "ready to carry out operations on the northern front with high intensity if necessary.”
Israeli drones attacked Hebbariyeh in the Arkoub region during the day, killing three combatants from the Jamaa Islamiya, a Sunni Islamist group, allied with Hezbollah.
The pro-Iranian party said that it had attacked Meron, located eight kilometers from the border and home to a major Israeli military air control base, “in response to Israeli attacks against southern villages and civilian homes,” including one that targeted the home of a member of the party in Khirbet Selm during the night on Saturday.
Three Hezbollah fighters, a father and his two sons, were among five people killed in the strike on Khirbet Selm, in which at least nine people were injured, most of them slightly.
Civil Defense teams affiliated with Hezbollah’s Islamic Message Scouts Association and the Islamic Health Committee worked throughout the night to remove the rubble to recover the bodies of the dead and clear the roads where the raid occurred. A large number of homes in the towns of Khirbet Selm and Sawwaneh were damaged, in addition to crops and infrastructure, especially the electricity and water networks.
