Stories of Unconventional Triumph: 'The Poetess' Documentary
On Friday, March 8, at 5:00 PM, the Bathish Auditorium at the American University of Beirut's West Hall will become the setting for an exclusive screening of The Poetess. This event is part of the ninth edition of the Beirut Art Film Festival's winter/spring 2024 lineup, and admission is complimentary, with a prerequisite for participation. The event is made possible through a collaboration with the Saadallah & Loubna Khalil Foundation and the AUB Center for Arts and Humanities, underlining the film's significance and the cultural dialogue it inspires.

In a daring showcase of defiance against conventional boundaries, Hissa Hilal emerges as a remarkable figure in contemporary Arabic literature. The veiled Saudi poetess stands as a beacon of freedom and courage, challenging societal norms through her evocative poetry. Her remarkable journey and bold voice are brought to life in the documentary film The Poetess, directed by Stefanie Brockhaus and Andreas Wolff. This compelling film, a co-production between Saudi Arabia and Germany in 2017, runs for 90 minutes and is subtitled in English, offering a vivid glimpse into Hilal's profound impact on Arabic literature and society.
