Pope Francis on Sunday called for "safe access" to humanitarian aid for the population of the Gaza Strip, where deadly Israeli bombardments are carried out in the Palestinian territory threatened with famine, according to the UN.

"Every day, I carry in my heart, with pain, the suffering of the people of Palestine and Israel as a result of the ongoing hostilities," said the Pope at the end of the Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.

"I encourage the continuation of negotiations for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and throughout the region, so that all the [Israeli] hostages can be released and returned to their relatives who are anxiously waiting for them, and so that the civilian population [of Gaza] can have safe access to the humanitarian aid they urgently need," he added.

"Enough, please, stop," said the Pontiff as an aid distribution in Gaza turned tragic on Thursday, resulting in dozens of deaths in circumstances yet to be established.
