- Wronecka Urges Southern De-escalation, Stresses Adherence to Resolution 1701
The UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Joanna Wronecka, expressed deep concern about the gradual escalation in the exchange of fire across the Blue Line, which increases the risk of a broader conflagration and undermines Security Council Resolution 1701 voted in 2006.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Wronecka urged an immediate halt to the dangerous cycle of violence and a return to a cessation of hostilities. She also stressed the urgent need to adhere to international humanitarian law and prioritize the protection of civilians.
The UN Special Coordinator said she was currently intensifying her engagement with all stakeholders to find urgent steps for de-escalation in southern Lebanon. She also encouraged efforts by international partners to assist the involved parties in finding sustainable solutions that enhance security and stability along the Blue Line.
Earlier this month, Wronecka met with Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and the Speaker of Parliament, Nabih Berri, to discuss the ongoing tensions at the southern border and diplomatic efforts to restore peace in the region.
