The National Moderation parliamentary bloc continued its tour of parliamentary blocs on Monday to present its initiative, which, if supported by a favorable majority, is set to break the presidential deadlock.
The initiative consists of gathering all parliamentary blocs at the Nejmeh Square (Parliament Square), after which they will call for an open electoral session with successive rounds until a president is elected. This option is seemingly favored by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.
Yesterday, a delegation from the bloc (MPs Walid Baarini, Mohammad Sleiman, Ahmed al-Khair, Abdul-Aziz al-Samad, Sajih Attieh and Ahmad Rustom) visited the Renewal bloc (Michel Moawad, Ashraf Rifi and Fouad Makhzoumi). Speaking on behalf of his group, Makhzoumi saluted the initiative, which he believes could “restore the Constitution to its former glory.”
The delegation also met with Change MPs Waddah Sadek, Mark Daou and Michel Doueihy, as well as with independent MPs, who also responded positively to their colleagues’ proposals.
The National Moderation bloc is set to meet with religious leaders on Tuesday.
