Municipal employees and municipalities' unions in Lebanon jointly declared a strike starting Monday, February 26 until Friday, March 1, within the municipalities.
Municipal employees and municipalities' unions are demanding a wage readjustment, transport costs and bonuses. The government and Parliament did not respond favorably to these demands, the press release reads.
It called on the government and deputies "to take immediate steps to ensure the sustainability of municipal work" by "amending" certain provisions of the wage scale so that municipal employees and workers can benefit from increases on a par with those in the private sector.
The union also called on those in charge to "find practical solutions so that these employees and workers can benefit from medical cover, which will be dissociated from the municipalities' budget, by registering them with the National Social Security Fund or the Civil Servants' Mutual Insurance Fund, or by creating a mutual Insurance Fund to be funded by the municipalities and federations of municipalities."
"It's not fair to put municipal and public sector employees on an equal footing in some areas and not in others," concluded the union.
