Southern Citizens File Lawsuit Against Lebanese State
Elie Mahfoud, a lawyer and the leader of the Change Movement Party, has taken legal action against the Lebanese state on behalf of a group of residents in the southern part of the country, affected by the war launched by Hezbollah against Israel.

During a press conference on Saturday, Mahfoud revealed that lawsuits have been filed to hold the state accountable for negligence, and demanded compensation for affected families.

"We have submitted a complaint to the public prosecution on 20/02/2024 No. 440/2024, and the file was transferred to the public prosecution of Appeals in Beirut on 22/02/2024 to proceed with the legal procedures," stated Mahfoud.

He continued, "Furthermore, we sent a warning letter to the Lebanese State through the Ministry of Finance, in which we demanded compensation for the affected families under penalty of suing the State before the competent courts."

On behalf of its clients, Mahfoud considered that the Lebanese state failed to protect its citizens and fulfill its responsibilities, asserting that "the protection function is no longer in the hands of the state, but of the de facto militia, which has seized major decisions" in the country.

Additionally, he emphasized the need for the Lebanese army to be deployed without any other partner to ensure the safety and security of the entire country, not just the South. Mahfoud stated, "The Lebanese Army must be solely deployed in the South, all of Lebanon must be disarmed, and the state must adhere to the constitution and international resolutions (Resolution 1559, 1701, 1680)."
