In a ceremony held at the Naval Forces Command in Beirut, the United States donated three boats and four speedboats to the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), reaffirming its commitment to Lebanon's security and stability. The event, attended by Armed Forces Commander General Joseph Aoun, US Ambassador to Lebanon Lisa Johnson, and several military attachés, marked a significant step in bolstering the capabilities of the LAF, particularly its naval forces.
He pointed out that the donation confirms the US government's support for the LAF, demonstrating its commitment to Lebanon's security and stability amidst political, economic, and social crises and the ongoing tensions in the south.
Expressing gratitude for the US support, the general remarked, "We thank the United States of America for its continued support to the Army in terms of arming and training, in addition to the seven-month salary subsidy." He reiterated the LAF's unwavering readiness to confront challenges, underscoring its commitment to safeguard Lebanon's sovereignty and resources.
Recognizing the current economic situation in Lebanon, he stated, “Maintaining security and stability in light of the deteriorating security and social situation requires a great effort by the military institution. While its members also suffer from the repercussions of the economic situation, they carry out their duties with full motivation and conviction in all missions assigned to them on land, sea, and air."
In her address, Ambassador Lisa Johnson emphasized the enduring partnership between Lebanon and the United States. She highlighted the donation's significance in bolstering the LAF's capabilities, particularly in maritime security. "Our partnership extends beyond this donation," Ambassador Johnson stated, pointing to the US commitment of $130 million in Foreign Military Financial Assistance to enhance the LAF's readiness and expand its capabilities.
Commending the dedication of Lebanese Navy sailors, Ambassador Johnson affirmed the US' ongoing support through training and expertise-sharing initiatives. "The Lebanese Navy sailors have demonstrated that they will effectively utilize the new vessels to meet the challenges within Lebanese territorial waters," she remarked.
