France announced sanctions, on Tuesday, on 28 Israeli settlers accused of committing violent acts against Palestinians in the West Bank.
These measures lead to an entry ban on “extremist Israeli settlers” from entering French territory.
“These measures come as violence perpetrated by settlers against the Palestinian population has increased in recent months,” says a statement by the Quai d’Orsay, indicating that it is Israel’s responsibility to halt such violent acts and prosecute settlers.
France also announced it is working with other European countries to adopt similar sanctions at the EU level.
In December, France’s then-foreign minister Catherine Colonna announced sanctions on violent Israeli settlers in the West Bank. In Israel earlier this month, current Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné stated that “settler violence” in the West Bank must cease.
France’s announcement comes one day after the United Kingdom imposed its sanctions on four Israeli citizens. The US imposed unprecedented travel and financial restrictions on Israelis accused of violent acts in settlements earlier this month.
