5-Storey Building Collapsed in Choueifat
A five-storey building collapsed in Choueifat without causing casualties. According to relevant information, the building collapsed 10 minutes after it was evacuated, after its residents thought an earthquake was occurring.

Commenting on the incident, the mayor of Choueifat, Chedid Hanna, said, "There were no injuries or victims in the building that collapsed in the Choueifat this morning."

The caretaker Minister of Public Works, Ali Hamiye, toured the place where the collapsed building was located in Choueifat, where he was assured of the safety of the people.

In turn, the Secretary-General of the Higher Relief Commission, Major General Muhammad Khair, inspected the site of the building’s collapse and asked the people and the affected residents to stay away from the area surrounding the building to make way for the work of removing the rubble.

In parallel, Major General Khair, under instructions from caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, is heading to the Choueifat area at one o’clock in the afternoon today to inspect the collapsed building and see the progress of the work of the rubble removal teams, in addition to the situation of the residents and neighboring buildings.

In a related context, the head of the Building Safety Network, engineer Youssef Fawzi Azzam, launched an urgent appeal to the government, "to launch an urgent state of emergency in the building safety file, considering the succession of events related to building safety, which we have warned about over the past years."

He pointed out in a statement, "The local authorities, with the support of the relevant ministries, must initiate field surveys to identify the buildings that require rapid intervention in the temporary consolidation process in the first phase, to preserve the lives and safety of citizens."

He stressed that "it is not possible for those concerned to count the successive scenes that will be repeated, especially since the building safety network indicated more than ten years ago that there are well over 16 thousand buildings distributed throughout the Lebanese territory that require rapid intervention."
