- Samy Gemayel: Hezbollah Should Not Decide the Future of the Lebanese People
“We refuse for Hezbollah to decide the future of the Lebanese people and destroy their country,” said Samy Gemayel, leader of the Kataeb party, on Tuesday.
In a speech to the Kataeb party members, he stated that “Lebanon will not be dragged into a major war, not today nor in a thousand years.”
Gemayel denounced Hezbollah for “deceiving people through their outlets, claiming to defend Lebanon through war, while they previously stated that they opened the front in defense of Hamas.”
He affirmed that Hezbollah’s real goal in engaging in war is “for Iran to impose itself as the main axis in the Middle East, protecting its interests, and selling positions to the Arab people.”
In response to the defamation campaign received from Hezbollah since the onset of the war in Gaza, Gemayel responded, “The message has been received, and we will not change our stance!”
Furthermore, he commented on Mikati’s compliance with Hezbollah’s demands, saying that the Caretaker Prime Minister was “saying the right thing and contradicting it two weeks later,” as well as “putting Lebanon’s decision in the hands of Hezbollah.”
Regarding the ongoing war in Gaza, Gemayel affirmed his party’s stance, saying, “We must defend the oppressed, but not to the extent of destroying our country.”
He continued, “We support the Palestinian people’s right to have a state, but we will not accept our country being destroyed for the sake of any country.”
Moreover, Gemayel reiterated that what Lebanon truly needed was “a popular resistance under the umbrella of the state and the Army.”
“The goal is not to abandon Hezbollah’s weapons but to put them under the command of the Lebanese Army,” he affirmed.
Finally, regarding the presidential deadlock, he stated, “We want a president who defends Lebanon, its borders, and its security.”
