Gangwon Winter Youth Games Kick Off

The Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon 2024 kicked off in grand style, hosting 1803 athletes from 79 countries. The Lebanese delegation, led by Raymond Succar, was honored during the opening ceremony, promising a month of thrilling competitions.

The opening ceremony of the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games took place on Friday at the Gangneung Oval, with the presence of 1803 male and female athletes representing 79 countries.

The Lebanese delegation participated in the team's general presentation during the opening of the fourth Winter Youth Olympic Games, which took place on the afternoon of Friday, January 19, 2024 (Beirut time). The event is hosted by the city of Gangwon in South Korea until the first day of next month, with a record participation of 1803 male and female athletes aged 15 to 18, representing 79 countries. These are the largest Winter Youth Olympic Games in terms of participation, succeeding games held in Austria, Norway, and Switzerland. The Lebanese delegation was led by its president, Raymond Succar, with the Lebanese flag carried by players Syrelle Lozom and Alexander Hayek.


The ceremony took place at the Gangneung Stadium, featuring a fictional girl from Gangwon named "Woori," meaning "Us." This girl dreams of becoming a space explorer, and the ceremony included a presentation by 300 artists, mainly amateur dancers, depicting "Woori's" journey, accompanied by musical performances of Korean pop.

The event's competitions include 81 events in seven sports and 15 specialties. South Korea has the largest delegation, with 102 male and female athletes.

Raymond Succar, the head of the Lebanese delegation, expressed his admiration and gratitude for the opening ceremony, praising the efforts of the organizing committee that provided all facilities for the participating delegations. He hopes for the success of the event, emphasizing that all delegation members are well, and according to the plan, the players will be technically ready for the matches starting from Tuesday, January 23. This begins with the player Kiana Sakkal in the alpine skiing competition (giant slalom).
