After several days of controversy surrounding the introduction of almost 1.5 million defective gas cylinders from Syria and rumors of a possible gas shortage in Lebanon, the Ministry of Energy issued a statement on Tuesday announcing that it had taken the necessary measures to that effect.
Caretaker Minister of Energy and Water, Walid Fayad, addressed memos to both the General Directorate of Customs and the relevant official authorities, requesting control over land borders and all Lebanese border entry points in order to prevent gas cylinder smuggling. Fayad also asked the relevant authorities to take the necessary measures when receiving information regarding the introduction, via border crossings, of used Syrian gas cylinders that do not meet Lebanese-approved specifications.
Fayad also stressed the need to keep on replacing old cylinders with new ones in order to safeguard public safety. To this end, he also asked companies involved in the replacement and disposal of old metal gas cylinders on the local market to continue implementing this decision.
The decision to replace domestic gas cylinders was taken in 2015. Some 5 million gas cylinders have already been replaced in Lebanon. The replacement fee, set at one dollar per gas cylinder, is still applicable.
