Lebanese Forces MP Razi el-Hage announced on Tuesday the results of the survey conducted by his office in collaboration with municipalities in the Metn district regarding the implementation of procedures and measures against the illegal Syrian presence in the villages and towns of Metn. This announcement was based on the letter sent by el-Hage to all Metn municipalities and mukhtars three months ago. Following his directives, his office contacted mayors and sub-prefects in municipalities, towns and villages without municipalities and administrative authorities.
El-Hage declared in a statement that, out of 53 municipalities, 43 implemented the measures. However, he told This is Beirut that in each municipality, “the number of measures implemented decreased, some by 25%, others by 60%.”
He also said that 10 municipalities were unable to implement the measures or did so partially without achieving effective results.
“There are 19 towns without municipalities, making it impossible to take effective measures due to the incapacity of the mukhtars to perform this task,” the statement added.
The statement pointed out that “the total number is approximately 82,828 individuals of various ages of Syrian nationality, with a margin of error between 10% to 20%. This means that the maximum population of Syrians in the Metn district does not exceed 95,000.”
“The coastal area of Metn, especially the geographical area extending from Bourj Hammoud to Al-Nabaa, Sin El Fil, Roueissat, Zaitriye and Al-Fanar, cannot be accurately counted. Meanwhile, villages and towns in the central and mountainous areas of Metn, in most municipalities, made significant efforts to maintain public order and enforce the law,” the statement concluded.
Of note, these numbers and this information have been verified with the relevant security authorities, according to the statement.
Regarding the steps that will follow in the future, he stated that “the campaign is ongoing to ensure the continuous readiness of municipalities and their ability to implement general directives and decisions issued by the Minister of Interior (Judge Bassam Mawlawi).”
“We aim to assist them in securing all necessary support for the implementation of these measures, keeping this matter within the framework of the goals we have set, namely: firstly, the enforcement of the law, secondly, the consolidation of security, and thirdly, the prevention of chaotic integration that is occurring,” he told This is Beirut.
He emphasized that they will “periodically resume our communications with municipalities to ensure the continuity of the measures, assess their implementation and evaluate the commitments of the municipalities.”
“We will provide them with all the necessary support, also through the central authority, the government and the relevant ministries, to support the municipalities,” he concluded.
