Private School Teachers Threaten Open Strike
The private school teachers' union has called for a general meeting on Monday, January 15, at 3:30 PM, to vote on the decision to observe an open strike in private schools. If a quorum is not reached at this first session, a second one will follow at 4:30 PM on the same day.

This call follows Friday morning's decision by the Council of Ministers to refer to the parliamentary committees the two laws passed by Parliament on December 15. To recall, these laws modify regulations relating to school budgets and contributions to the Compensation Fund.

In protest, Catholic schools had announced an open strike on December 21, which was eventually lifted, and classes resumed to normal on January 8, following mediation by Bkerke. A subcommittee dedicated to this issue had been formed upon the initiative of the Maronite Patriarch Bechara al-Rai.

Chaired by the Caretaker Minister of Education, Abbas Halabi, the commission includes representatives of private schools, parents, the teachers' union, the Compensation Fund, and MPs.

In a statement, the union said that the two laws are "enforceable" and "cannot be referred back to Parliament, even though the Council of Ministers approved them at its meeting on December 19." Calling on the parliamentary blocs to assume their responsibilities, the union blamed the government and the political parties represented in it "for ensuring the income of over 4,000 retired teachers and their families, as well as the necessary funds for the Compensation Fund."

The union has also indicated that it intends to take the government's decision to the Council of State.
