The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell made a first statement after he arrived in Beirut Friday.
“Our priorities are avoiding regional escalation and pushing for diplomatic efforts to create conditions for achieving a fair and lasting peace between Israel and Palestine and in the region.”
Borrell has been set to embark on a significant two-day diplomatic mission to Lebanon from January 5 to 7.
Borrell’s agenda includes meetings with Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdallah Bou Habib, and Lebanese Armed Forces Commander General Joseph Aoun.
According to a statement released by the European Union External Action (EEAS) press team, Borrell is set to engage in discussions with General Aroldo Lazaro, the Head of Mission and Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
