- Bou Saab: Implementation of Resolution 1701 Depends on Israel First
Deputy Speaker Elias Bou Saab said on Friday that United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 "must first be implemented by Israel before discussing how it will be applied in Lebanon."
These comments come amid growing local and international calls for full implementation of the resolution since Hezbollah opened the southern front on October 8 in support of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in its war against Israel.
Emphasizing that the application of 1701 keeps Lebanon safe from war, Bou Saab pointed out that it is the Hebrew state that is violating this resolution. He argued that the states calling for its application "know very well that no party abides by it."
"Lebanon can do without war," Bou Saab added, at the end of a visit to the Metropolitan of Beirut, Bishop Elias Audi. He also denounced the daily Israeli attacks on the border regions of southern Lebanon, which have claimed many victims, including civilians.
When asked about Israeli threats to occupy South Lebanon, Bou Saab asserted that this "will not be an easy ride for the Hebrew state." "The war will be painful for Israel, and it knows it," he concluded.
