The Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Beirut, Bishop Elias Audi, declared during Sunday Mass that "Lebanon is not ready to slide into the arena of conflict, nor is it prepared for its unity to be threatened.”
He stated that with a presidential vacuum, Lebanon is "in the eye of the storm" and will face dire consequences as the conflict persists: "Its role has been lost, and its capabilities have been abandoned."
He also mentioned "those who disregard the constitution and trample on justice abound, and the results of their actions harm the country," referring to Hezbollah’s repeated efforts to obstruct presidential elections.
The Mass was also an occasion to commemorate the 18th anniversary of the assassination of Gebran Tueni and his companions.
Audi stressed that no other person has demonstrated Tueni’s "courage, faith, and sincere patriotism. Perhaps hearts have weakened by the silencing of voices."
"Gebran Tueni was a loud voice in the depths of the country darkened by the lust for money and power," he said, adding that the slain journalist and politician was a victim of two cultures: “the culture of a person who loved his homeland and the culture of a criminal who wanted to silence all freedoms."
