The war between Israel and Hamas entered its 69th day on Thursday. According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, 18,787 people were killed in Israeli bombardments, most of them women, children and teenagers. For its part, Israel announced that 1,200 people, mostly civilians, died in the attack on 7 October. In addition, around a hundred Israeli soldiers are reported to have died since the start of the offensive in Gaza.

The War Will Continue

The war in Gaza "will last more than a few months", warned Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant during the visit to Israel of US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

"Hamas is a terrorist organisation that has built itself up over a decade to fight Israel and has put in place underground and aerial infrastructures that are not easy to destroy. It will take time - more than a few months - but we will defeat and destroy" Hamas, he declared.

Washington Wants the War to End “As Soon as Possible

The United States, an ally of Israel, wants the war between Israel and Hamas to "end as soon as possible", said White House spokesman John Kirby.

During his visit to Israel on Thursday, Mr Sullivan discussed the possibility of switching the Israeli offensive in Gaza to "low-intensity operations" "in the near future", the spokesman added.

Erdogan Warns of Regional “Consequences

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned US President Joe Biden on Thursday evening of the "negative regional and global consequences" of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

"President Erdogan said that the intensification and prolongation of Israeli attacks could have negative regional and global consequences," reported the Turkish Presidency in a statement issued after the telephone conversation.
Telecommunications Cut

Telecommunications in the Gaza Strip have been cut off, the Palestinian operator Paltel announced in a statement on Thursday. This is the third time that telecommunications have been cut in the Palestinian territory.

Mosque Desecrated in Jenin

The Palestinian Authority on Thursday condemned images showing Israeli soldiers reciting a Jewish prayer in a mosque in the occupied West Bank, describing this "desecration" as "shameful".

The video, obtained by AFP, shows Israeli soldiers inside a mosque in the Jenin refugee camp, using its loudspeakers to recite the Shema Yisrael, a major Jewish prayer.

Eleven Palestinians were killed in the incursion, which began on Tuesday, into the Jenin refugee camp.

New Houthi Attack in the Red Sea

Yemen's Houthis fired a missile at a cargo ship in the Red Sea on Thursday, but missed their target, according to a US official and a private intelligence company.

Danish shipping giant Maersk, the Maersk Gibraltar, said on Thursday that one of its container ships had been the victim of an "incident" in the Red Sea, two days after an attack on a Norwegian oil tanker.

Investigation on Attack on the American Embassy in Iraq

The Iraqi authorities announced on Thursday that they had arrested several of the assailants who took part in the attack on the American embassy in Baghdad, adding that some of those responsible for the rocket attacks "have links with certain security services".

Salvoes of rockets were fired at dawn on 8 December against the American embassy in the Iraqi capital without causing any injuries, against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions fuelled by the war in the Gaza Strip between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas.
