Moawad: The Timing of the Council of Ministers Is Suspicious
Following a meeting of the 'Renewal' parliamentary bloc, Michel Moawad, MP for Zgharta, asserted that "the timing of the Council of Ministers scheduled for Friday is suspicious," stressing the need to follow "the legislative process to guarantee the extension of the mandate" of Army Commander-in-Chief Joseph Aoun.

As a reminder, the Caretaker Prime Minister has called a Cabinet session devoted to postponing General J. Aoun's retirement, scheduled for January 10, on Friday, while Parliament is also due to sit on Thursday with several bills on the agenda concerning the mandate of the Commander-in-Chief and other security chiefs.

For Moawad, the battle to extend the commander's mandate "is not a fight for the presidency of the Republic, but rather an attempt to undermine and dominate the military institution in the current regional context while trying to prevent the implementation of Resolution 1701." He continued, "This political battle is not a confrontation between individuals but aims to protect the Army against the vacuum and prevent any attack on the military institution. They [the Moumanaa axis] seek to weaken the Army in order to seize the map of southern Lebanon."
