The Colors of India concert, scheduled for the 20th and 21st of December 2023 at the Saint-Joseph Church of the Jesuit Fathers in Monnot, is poised to be a landmark event in the cultural landscape. This unique concert harmoniously blends classical, Indian, and Western musical styles.

Yasmina Sabbah, the conductor, introduces the event with these inspiring words: “Focus on the essential, focus on the light. These words of Rumi, chosen to conclude the Colors of India concert, resonate powerfully in these dark times. We celebrate the privilege of continuing our passion for music, a beacon in the darkness. We invite you to join us for a one-of-a-kind musical experience that highlights a fusion, or ‘crossover,' of Indian and Western classical styles.”

At the heart of this celebration, the USJ Choir is renowned for its excellence and bold creativity. It perfectly embodies the vision of contemporary “crossover” music, a genre that mixes various styles and cultures, breaking down the barriers between musical traditions. This approach fosters artistic experimentation and collaboration among musicians, stimulating new ideas and broadening musical horizons.

Concert Program: The aim of Colors of India is to merge the realms of Indian and Western classical music. To this end, the works of two eminent Indian composers will be featured:

Part 1 - This Love Between Us by Reena Esmail This piece celebrates unity through the lyrics of seven major Indian religious traditions, including Buddhism, Sikhism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Islam. The text, performed in English and the original languages, is accompanied by a fusion of Indian and Western classical styles. This composition brings together musicians from various traditions, each remaining true to their own culture while opening up to others.

Part 2 - The Cinematic Hits of A. R. Rahman

A. R. Rahman, famed for his contributions to over 100 films and the sale of more than 300 million copies worldwide, will be the focus. His compositions, which have won Oscars and Grammy Awards, particularly for Slumdog Millionaire, will be performed in special arrangements for choir and orchestra.
