The World Bank (WB) announced on Thursday the redirection of $250 million in aid to Lebanon, initially earmarked to promote the development of renewable energies, towards emergency aid for people displaced by Israeli bombardments in the south of the country.

“The World Bank has activated its emergency response plan in order to be able to redirect resources earmarked in the Lebanon portfolio to meet the urgent needs of the population,” announced the Washington-based financial institution in a statement.

This emergency aid will be “implemented in close coordination with our development and humanitarian aid partners,” reads the statement.

This sum was initially earmarked to reinforce Lebanon’s electricity system by making it more self-sufficient thanks to renewable energies.
