German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron expressed solidarity with Israel on Sunday and warned against a regional “conflagration.”

The German government condemned the Iranian strikes against Israel on Sunday, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressing concern about the risk of “conflagration” in the region, which could “descend into chaos” according to the head of diplomacy Annalena Baerbock.

Olaf Scholz “strongly” condemned the Iranian air strikes against Israel, government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said on Sunday morning.

“With this irresponsible and unjustifiable attack, Iran risks a regional conflagration,” the spokesman added. “In these difficult times, Germany stands shoulder to shoulder with Israel,” and its government will now “discuss further reactions in close cooperation with our G7 partners and allies,” according to Mr. Hebestreit.

The G7 heads of state and government will meet by video conference early Sunday afternoon “to discuss the Iranian attack on Israel,” as announced by the Italian government.

For his part, Emmanuel Macron “condemned with the utmost firmness” the unprecedented attack launched by Iran against Israel” and called for “restraint” from all parties involved, in a message published on X on Sunday.

“I condemn in the strongest possible terms the unprecedented attack launched by Iran against Israel, which threatens to destabilize the region. I express my solidarity with the Israeli people and France’s commitment to the security of Israel, our partners and regional stability. France is working with its partners to de-escalate the situation, and calls for restraint,” wrote the French President.

“We are working to avoid an even greater military crisis,” Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on public broadcaster Rai3.

“The G7 will send messages to Israel, the utmost caution is needed to prevent the situation from worsening,” “while last night’s Iranian retaliation may start a dangerous spiral,” he added.

The Security Council is also due to hold an emergency meeting on Sunday, with UN chief Antonio Guterres condemning “a serious escalation.”
