Valued French actress Isabelle Adjani was notably absent from her tax evasion trial, which began in Paris this past Thursday October 19. The 68-year-old actress is currently facing accusations of disguising a monetary gift of two million euros as a loan.

In addition to being accused of having concealed a two-million-euro gift by presenting it as a loan, Isabelle Adjani is alleged to have falsely claimed two years of residency in Portugal instead of her actual residence in France.

The actress has fervently refuted these charges. She asserts that the aforementioned two million euros was indeed a legitimate loan, facilitated by Mr. Mamadou Diagna NDiaye, a prominent Senegalese business magnate and esteemed member of the International Olympic Committee.

Isabelle Adjani’s legal representatives ardently sought to postpone the trial, citing her presence in the United States and her affliction with “an acute condition incompatible with flying,” emphasizing her intent to be present for the court proceedings. However, the judiciary denied this request, highlighting the ample time she has had since June to make necessary arrangements. They noted her last-minute flight booking, scheduled to land merely two hours before the trial started.

The prosecution has recommended the court to consider an 18-month suspended sentence alongside a fine amounting to 250,000 euros for Adjani. The financial prosecutor remarked, “Isabelle Adjani’s name is ultimately of little importance,” underscoring that “her celebrity was neither an additional reason nor an obstacle to prosecution.”

Adjani’s distinguished career in French cinema includes noteworthy performances in films such as The Story of Adele H, Camille Claudel, Quartet and One Deadly Summer. Her illustrious accolades encompass five Cesar Awards for Best Actress, which is the pinnacle of French cinema awards, top honors at both the Berlin and Cannes film festivals and two Oscar nominations.
